What is a Dog Board and Train Service?

A dog board and train gives you a jump start and takes care of a lot of the “dirty work.”  Got a wild pup and no time to train? You need a board & train!

What does dog boarding help with?

In the early stages of training it can take a lot of patience to teach the new commands/behaviors and do lots of repetitions. Board and train gets the difficult beginning part out of the way for you.

It is also a great way to “reset” your dog by removing them from their current environment of bad habits. Technically we are re-teaching them in another. Board and trains can be a great option for when you travel instead of just doing boarding.

Why not get the much needed training done at the same time? Our board and train dogs will often be participating in daycare throughout the day. While they are here for training, they also improve their social skills. We have a 2 week minimum because that is at least how long it takes to change the dogs brain from old habits. In many cases the 4 week program is needed for longer term habits, older dogs, or off leash obedience.

With our programs, you are going to have a dog that now knows better behavior and many new commands.

Board and Train: A ‘head start’

Don’t think you are totally off the hook however. We give a full lesson upon return so you know how to keep up with the training. It must be applied as strictly as possible, otherwise the dog will notice you are not consistent. They will try to revert back to old behaviors. We now offer unlimited follow ups so we can really help preserve the hard work we put into your dogs. Should any issues arise. We do have such a high success rate, most of our clients haven’t even used their follow up lessons!

For dogs that have already trained with us, we offer maintenance training during daycare or boarding to keep their skills fresh. For just a little extra fee on top of our daycare or boarding rates, we will keep your dogs mind stimulated and their behavior consistent.

Dogs can get confused by inconsistency. Just like humans. Board & train services give your dog their best chance to learn their manners and commands.

Our program is run by Master dog trainer, Julie McLean, owner of Zen Doggy Den in Wheat Ridge, CO. We have very high standards in our training approach, so you can be assured that your pup will be showered with disciplined love while they go through the program. You can even come back for “tune-ups” when needed.

The Benefits of Board and Train for Dogs

Many of us are still working from home. This means that an unruly furry friend can create major stress throughout the work day. Traditional training is often difficult to incorporate into a busy schedule — so what can you do? Board and train is an amazing solution for those who need results without the time that traditional training requires. Read on to learn about the benefits of board and train programs!

What is board and train for dogs?

Board and train refers to a type of training program where dogs stay with a certified trainer or in a training facility. Duration would be in the day or night for an extended period of time. These programs typically last between two and four weeks.

Most board and train programs go over basic commands such as “heel”,“sit,” “down,” “stay,” and “come.” If needed, there are also programs that focus on behavior modification for issues such as aggression, reactivity, anxiety and socialization..

Traditional training programs might involve a weekly class or individual lessons with a trainer who will teach you how to train your own dog. Board and train is unique because the majority of the work is done for you! While the owner gets a break from stressing about an untrained dog, the dog is hard at work with a professional.

What are the benefits of boarding and training?

As previously mentioned, dog board and train is a wonderful solution for people who may not have the time or patience it takes to commit to a traditional training program. This may include people with hectic work schedules, parents juggling children’s activities. Or simply people who are overwhelmed by the amount of time and effort it takes to train a dog.

Board and train is also a great option for families going on vacation! If you’re already boarding your pet, you might as well return from travel with a fully trained dog. In traditional boarding situations, dogs may get a little bored or anxious during a long stay. Board and train is the complete opposite; your dog will be working with a trainer and other dogs for the majority of the day.

Of course, the most important benefit of this is the training itself. Oftentimes, while stuck in a familiar environment, dogs struggle to change their annoying, distracting or downright destructive habits. However, this program is designed to create a brand new environment for your dog. This is believed to encourage dogs to create new habits.

What is the owner’s involvement in a board and train program?

Though board and train programs traditionally involve a trainer doing the grunt work with your dog, the owners are still an important process. The only way to make the program successful is for the owner to continue the work at home.

Luckily, one of the biggest benefits of these services is that you won’t be starting from scratch. As long as the owner can continue to enforce the habits and discipline created by the board and train program, the dog should be able to take the skills learned at board and train and apply them back in their familiar environment.

Additionally, it may be beneficial to look for a program that provides unlimited follow ups. This means that if, upon returning home, your dog struggles to apply some of their new skills, the trainer from the board and train program will continue to assist your dog in its transition back to home.

What to Expect When Boarding Your Dog

If you have never boarded your dog before, you are probably feeling a lot of emotions like worry, fear, and confusion. Whether you’re going away for a weekend trip to the mountains or an extended getaway, making sure you feel comfortable and confident about boarding your furry friends is of utmost importance. In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know before boarding your dog for the first time.

Leaving Your Dog for the First Time

Whether you’re leaving for a short weekend getaway or an extended vacation, leaving your dog for the first time can be scary for you and your pup. It might cause a little anxiety for you and some separation anxiety for your furry friend, but leaving your dog for the first time can be a positive experience if you have all of the necessary information. We’re sure that you and your fur baby want a little extra comfort when being separated for the first time and being prepared for an overnight trip to the kennel will definitely ease those anxious jitters.

Your Dog Boarding Checklist

Making sure you know what you and your pup are getting into before you head off on your vacation is super important. There is a lot of information out there for what you should and shouldn’t do before dropping your dog off for a little playtime with their friends, an overnight stay, or an extended pupcation! Here’s our list that covers everything you need to know:

  • Find a reputable kennel/boarding facility or pet boarding service: DO YOUR RESEARCH! For us, our pets are equivalent to our children and if you’re reading this, we’re sure you feel the same! Doing your research and finding the best place to board your dog can take some time, but it’s well worth it. TIP: Don’t price shop – the cheapest boarding facility you find might not be your best option. Higher prices usually mean better quality facilities and services.
  • Visit the kennel or boarding facility before dropping your pet off if possible.. Visiting the dog boarding facility will typically give you a sense of what kind of place it is and what matters to them.
  • Make an appointment: Most boarding facilities, including ours, ask for reservations placed in advance for daycare and overnight boarding. We recommend making a reservation for boarding your dog at least 24 hours in advance if possible to guarantee a spot for your pet at your desired time. (That said, please, do not hesitate to contact us for last minute reservations. Many times, we can absolutely accommodate you!)
  • Prep your pet for their visit: Gather up your dog’s favorite toys and comfort items! They like to be reminded of home when they are in a new environment. You can bring your own bedding, but better to ask if the dog boarding facility provides blankets (we do!) Also, it’s always a good idea to drop off your dog’s food with them as they are already used to this food – you don’t want to risk an upset tummy! You should also bring any medications your dog is taking on a regular basis and make sure to communicate this to the boarding facility.
  • Make sure the facility has your contact information: It would be really unfortunate if we couldn’t get a hold of you while you’re away, so making sure the boarding facility has your contact information is always important!

What to Ask When Looking for a Boarding Facility

If you’re anything like us, feeling confident about who is providing care to your dog while you’re away is top on your priority list. As much as you want to find a boarding facility that meets and even exceeds the needs of your furry friend, they want to do that as well! The boarding facility will most likely ask you questions regarding your dog’s vaccination record, health history, and if they are on any daily medications. Some questions you might want to ask when researching boarding facilities are:

  • Where do they play?
  • How often to do they go out?
  • How much playtime do they get per day?
  • Is playtime usually inside or outside?
  • Would you accommodate my dog if they can’t play with other dogs? (Many places will not do that or they will charge extra. We accommodate those at no extra charge.)

What You Should Bring to a Dog Boarding Facility

There’s no such thing as being over prepared when it comes to your fur babies, so making sure you know what to bring when dropping your dog off at a boarding facility is important. Each dog has different needs, but in general, the main items you should bring are:

  • Food (but no water or food bowls please)
  • Any medications
  • Toys
  • Bed and blanket(s)
  • Treats or bones
  • Leash (and make sure your pup’s collar in on snug enough that they can’t easily wrestle out of it!)
  • Anything else your dog uses on a given day
